My name is Anirudha Joshi. I have been a faculty member in the IDC School of Design, IIT Bombay since 1998. In our “Interaction Design for Indian Needs” group in IDC, we try to solve some age-old problems by leveraging new technologies. We have worked in diverse domains including healthcare, literacy, Indian language text input, usable security, banking, education, accessibility, industrial equipment, and packaging, and for diverse users including emergent users, older adults, visually impaired, illiterate and those with less education, farmers, pregnant poor in urban India, and people living with HIV / AIDS.
I joined IDC as an Assistant Professor in 1998. In 2005, I got promoted to Associate Professor and in 2011, I got promoted to Professor. I was the Head of the Department from 2022 to 2025.
Before IIT Bombay, I worked in the industry for 7 years. I started my design career in TCS creating educational videos and computer-based training programmes. Subsequently I worked with Western Outdoors Interactive, where I led a team responsible for creating multimedia content and interfaces for in-flight entertainment software. I worked with Folklore Communications offering multimedia and web based content creation services. I also did a one-year stint in Telco (now Tata Motors).
I have a BTech in Electrical Engineering (1985-1989) and a MDes in Visual Communication (1990-1992). I did my PhD in Computer Science (2005-2011). All my degrees are from IIT Bombay.

Anirudha Joshi has worked as a faculty member in the IDC School of Design, IIT Bombay, India since 1998. His research is in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). He was one of the first teachers to introduce user studies, usability evaluation, and qualitative and quantitative research methods in design education in India.
Anirudha is part of the “Interaction Design for Indian Needs” group in IDC. The group aims to solve some age-old problems by leveraging new technologies. Researchers in the group have worked in diverse domains including healthcare, literacy, Indian language text input, usable security, banking, education, accessibility, industrial equipment, and packaging, and for groups of users including emergent users, older adults, visually impaired, illiterate and those with less education, farmers, pregnant poor in urban India, and people living with HIV / AIDS. Anirudha served as the Head of the Department of IDC from 2022 to 2025.
Anirudha is active with HCI communities in India and outside. He has played various roles in India HCI, INTERACT, CHI, Mobile HCI and IUI conferences. He serves as Associate Editor for ToCHI, IJHCS and JCSS. Since 2007, Anirudha has represented India on IFIP TC13. From 2016 to 2021, he served as the VP Finance of the ACM SIGCHI Executive Committee. Anirudha has served as a Director of the HCI Professionals Association of India since 2013.
In 2015, he received the IFIP Outstanding Service Award. In 2016, he received the Prof. SP Sukhatme Excellence in Teaching Award from IIT Bombay. In 2019, he received the IFIP TC13 Pioneer Award. In 2025, he received the IDC School of Design Departmental Award for Excellence in Teaching.
Anirudha received a BTech in Electrical Engineering (1989), an MDes in Visual Communication (1992), and a PhD in Computer Science and Engineering (2011), all from IIT Bombay. His PhD thesis was about integration of HCI activities in software engineering for usability goals achievement.
